About Us
What is OurKidsCode?
OurKidsCode is a research project based in the School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin. We are a non-commercial entity, funded by Research Ireland, the Department of Education and the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltach.
We explore how bringing children and their families together to learn, create and play with technology can build confidence and encourage greater participation in computing.
"OurKidsCode provides the environment for parents and kids to be creative, playful, informed, engaged, curious and empowered in their use of technology."
Our Core Aim
Our core aims are to increase parental involvement and promote greater diversity in computer education, by providing STEAM opportunities for families with primary aged children, particularly in rural communities.
We believe that the club setting, with families working together, increases confidence in coding in a fun and relaxed environment. OurKidsCode Club MeetUps are sociable and enjoyable.
STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Maths)
Parental engagement and involvement in their kids' STEAM learning!
How does it Work?
OurKidsCode helps families in rural Ireland discover the world of computing through fun, creative coding activities, with step-by-step support to start a coding club in their local community.
Stages
A Taster Workshop is a 2-hour facilitated session in which up to 6 families from a local area experience creative coding together. This workshop is designed for parents and kids to work as a team to create Micro:bit Rock Paper Scissors wristband.
If families enjoyed the Taster Workshop and wish to do more, they are invited to continue to meet for 3-4 more facilitated creative coding sessions. The facilitator encourages and help set up a local family-led coding club. OurKidsCode Clubs choose to meet as often as suits their interests and schedules, usually between once a week and once a month.
