About Us & Our Research
OurKidsCode is a research project based in the School of Computer Science and Statistics, Trinity College Dublin. We are a non-commercial entity, funded by Research Ireland, the Department of Education and the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht. Our core aims are to increase parental involvement and promote greater diversity in computer education, by providing STEM opportunities for families with primary aged children, particularly in rural communities.
It all started with a poster in the Parents Association WhatsApp group in 2023. Some families decided that coding could be something they learned together.
After joining a Taster workshop and a few more, they were hooked. With little confidence using computers, encouragement from their facilitator gave them the boost to keep experimenting and creating.
By 2024, Ballindangan Coding Club was born. Five families began meeting together, choosing projects, experimenting and learning as they went. Some projects worked, some didn’t — but there was always something to learn and plenty of fun.
Today, eight families are part of the club. What once felt far beyond their abilities — entering the DreamSpace Showcase — became an annual goal. And in 2026, Ballindangan Coding Club was named OurKidsCode Club of the Year at Microsoft Dreamspace.
